CHOIR

“a truly amazing, hard-working bunch of talented kids who love to sing their hearts out”

Thomond Primary School choir was formed in 2015 by a teacher in our school, Kate Hurley. It is made up of children from 3rd to 6th class and since starting 4 years ago, the choir has quadrupled in size! It now has a whopping 70 plus members and it is going from strength to strength every year without a doubt.

We practice every Monday evening for an hour after school and some of Kate’s 6th class members have even been as dedicated to stay in at some lunchtimes to be taught some harmony lines. Our accompanist is Aidan Boland – we would be lost without him. Aidan takes time out of his busy teaching week to come to TPS and play with us every Monday evening. We’re extremely grateful to have him as part of our team.

Each school year, TPS choir sing at many events including the annual Lourdes Christmas fundraising concert in St Munchin’s church. They’re regular carollers at the University Hospital Limerick and St. Camilus’ Hospital every December, something they love dearly. However, the highlight of their school year is of course the Limerick Choral Festival every March. In 2017, the choir placed joint third in the Primary School’s competition which took place in the Redemptorist’s Church. When they thought it couldn’t get any better, Kate received a call on the Saturday evening, following the closing ceremony of the choral festival to be told that their second piece ‘This Ol’ Man’ had in fact won the overall title of ‘Special Adjudicators Award’, chosen from the entire weekend of competitions.

In 2018, TPS held their title and took home the same ‘Special Adjudicators Award’ for the second year running for their rendition of ‘The Ratlin’ Bog’. Just last March, they placed third with a ‘Highly Commended Performance’ of both their pieces, ‘Lord, I Need You’ & ‘Shoo, fly Shoo!’. We can only look forward to what next year brings!
